Santa Marie DI firari
History of Santa Maria di friari:
The satrt of the summer in the year of 1630 a wave of disease
spreaded thorughout Venice. It killed over 1500 people. As many people went to chrch to pray it didnt make a difference.
So the Venetians wanted a church that would be easily accesible from Piazza San Marco. So it was decided and as a competition went on for the best design for the building. 11 only participated. (including designs by: Alessandro Varotari, Matteo Ignoli and Berteo Belli.)
Though only 2 went thorugh the next round..
The ones to go through were.. Architects named baldasarre Longhena.(il Fracao) Though he died after his whole design was finished so instead an architect named Zambattista Rubertini.
His quotes were;
I have created a church in the form of a rotunda, a work of new invention, not built in Venice, a work very worthy and desired by many. This church, having the mystery of its dedication, being dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, made me think, with what little talent God has bestowed upon me of building the church in the ... shape of a crown.
Later after it was created he said;
"Firstly, it is a virgin work, never before seen, curious, worthy and beautiful, made in the form of a round monument that has never been seen, nor ever before invented, neither altogether, nor in part, in other churches in this most serene city, just as my competitor (il Fracao) has done for his own advantage, being poor in invention."
Rounding out our Top Ten was difficult but we decided to throw in Santa Maria di Friari, otherwise known more simply as 'Friari'.
As far as the big churches go, we much preferred San Giovanni E Paolo and Basilica San Marco. We also enjoyed the surprising Chiesa di Santa Maria dei Carmini a bit more. However, St. Mary of the Friars was probably next in line within our favorite church visits in Venice. There is enough to see within Stanta Maria di Friari to make an effort to visit this church during a trip to Venice.
